If the angle of the sun had anything to say about it, it had been nearly noon when Holladrin had woken--about an hour ago now. Her husband, if she'd even been well enough for him to share the bed, would have left some hours prior. She'd resigned herself to the reality that he might not get a chance to see her until the evening, but it seemed that the heavens were smiling down on her, as he strolled into the room just as she'd considered getting dressed and going about her usual routine. "Glad to see you awake."
His voice was both tired and relieved. Holladrin's heart beat as though filled with lead. She wished she wouldn't worry the poor man so. "I hope I'm not keeping you from anything important."
"Of course you're not." Octavius smiled at her, then nudged the door back into place and set course for the empty side of the bed. "How are you feeling?"

"Just a little light-headed." She nudged herself upward a couple inches against the headboard, the pillow firmer than she remembered against her tired spine. "Much better than yesterday."
"The day before, you mean."
Holladrin raised an eyebrow. Surely he did not mean...? "I slept through all of yesterday?"

Holladrin raised an eyebrow. Surely he did not mean...? "I slept through all of yesterday?"
A thick lump of everything and nothing formed in her throat and only swelled when he nodded. "Well... maybe not quite all of it. But the important thing is that you're awake now. Anyway, should I send for some breakfast? Or just water, perhaps?"
"Ellene already brought me some water and a bit of fruit; I should be all right for now." Good old Ellene. She'd practically had the meal waiting for her, fresh yet prompt, just the perfect amount. Holladrin wondered what would come of her maid when she passed. She hoped someone would take Ellene on--but with her skills, perhaps that was a needless worry. Maybe Pandora would take her, and then Thallie could have the girl they currently shared all to herself.
Ah, but maybe it was still too early to worry about dying just yet--after all, had she not had worse? And maybe it was a bit selfish to dwell on her own health; there were always others in dire straights, after all. "How is your brother?"

"Quartus?" She nodded. Octavius sighed. "Well... not any worse."
"But not any better."
"No." He let his head fall back against the board, his hazel eyes waning beneath the weight of his lashes. "Old Hilla says a whore in the local brothel and three other men in the area are down with the same thing. I suppose at least he was doing what he loved?"
"I suppose," Holladrin agreed, though the thought seemed bittersweet at best and her husband's melancholy did little to help. But she supposed she could understand; she had brothers too. "Odd, though. He was always so healthy before."
"That he was." An audible breath escaping him, Octavius raised his hand to the back of his neck and gave it a quick rub. "Then again, I suppose no one ever knows."

Sorry for missing yesterday's Realmspeaker. I had kind of a busy day, which was unfortunately timed since the next post is pretty important. But it should be up tomorrow :)
In other news, I had a bit of an issue with my computer today that required a system restore. Things seem to be running okay now but I am on alert. Luckily, I do have a backup computer in case I have to take this one in. That being said, if anything happens that compromises updates, I'll keep you posted.
Also, if you haven't already, you might want to go check out the new poll on my blog regarding Naroni's upcoming anniversary. Just sayin'.
This is going to sound quite callous, but ... it's about damn TIME one of those priests caught something! Good Lord!
(As for Lonriad the Elder, I think, at this point, he's been exposed to so much that the diseases are attacking each other instead of attacking him.)
Holladrin and Octavius are just too damn cute. *sigh* And Holladrin is almost too good to be true. I guess she's resigned herself to dying relatively young, though I hope she'll hold out for a good long time. She's certainly not as bad as say, Isaura from Mhalwae.
Poor Octavius. Between Sparron and Holladrin ... he doesn't have much cause to be a happy fella, does he? :(
Yeaaaah, it's a shame, but it was probably inevitable :S
Ha! Lonriad has the Medieval STD equivalent of Mr. Burns Syndrome :P
I think Holladrin always knew she was doomed to die young-ish. But yeah, she is holding up better than poor Isaura :(
And then there's Jeda's horrible marriage too! Octavius is not a happy camper.
He does need a bit of goodness in his life, really, doesn't he? Is Holladrin's disease something Tavrin can't handle? (I can't even remember where Tavrin is now...I should go do a re-cap soon, probably).
He could certainly use a break :S
Tavrin, unfortunately, can't do much for Holladrin. With Florian and Searle, both of their problems were caused by some living agent (parasites in Florian's case, bacteria in Searle's). Holladrin's main problem is her DNA. She's just strapped with a combination of some bad asthma plus a horrible immune system, so Tavrin can't really do much other than treat symptoms. It would have been the same with Viridis.
Hollandrin's quiet acceptance, her concern for her maid, her struggle to relieve her husband's concern...I don't know what to say except it takes a strength most people would not have.
Octavius is obviously trying to do the best he can with an overwhelming burden, but not one he can shift. The love between the two of them is beautiful but painful to watch as one of them leaves the other behind. And I can't believe I said something so stupid.
And it is about time one of those priests caught something.
Sadly, Holladrin has had way too much time to gather that strength :(
Octavius is... well, he's trying to cope. There's really not much else he can do, other than keep her comfortable and keep the local medics on hand to buy Holladrin enough time as possible.
Yeah, I think the priests had it coming :S
Wait, which blog has the poll? I am confuzzled.
I laughed so hard at the Mr. Burns Syndrome. His STD's are cancelling one another out!
I'm not sure that it IS time one of the priests caught something. Quartus has probably passed whatever it is to 20 different women by now, all of whom may find themselves kicked out on the street by their husbands, fathers, employers etc-- Not only diseased but hated.
I don't think that it is unhealthy for Holladrin to start making plans for her untimely death while she still has the where-with-all to make plans. She's been living on borrowed time for years now.
This one here: http://dinurielhq.blogspot.com/
Heheheh... it's so true :P
Yeah, whatever it is must be spreading like crazy. I suppose it was inevitable, though :S
I wouldn't say it's unhealthy. She knows she probably doesn't have much time, so she might as well start getting things in order. Not unhealthy at all. Just sad :(
Yeesch, not looking forward to post-Holladrin Octavius.
Expect some angst on that front :S
