Struggling to keep her composure, Thetis managed to tone her reaction to a mere crook of the eyebrow in her daughter's direction. "Alyssin! Be nice!"
Alyssin's mouth twisted into an ess-like squiggle. "What? She's always over here, but they're never hanging off each other; it's a perfectly valid question!"
Satisfied, Alyssin nodded. "Commitment issues?"
Setran slouched back and groaned--as if Thetis had needed that prompt to send the boy's sister a warning glare. "Do you want to go upstairs and relieve Goodwife Noth of the babysitting duties?"
She watched as that pair of blue-gray eyes rolled toward the back of Alyssin's skull. "No..."
"Oh, it's quite all right," Riala assured her with a sickly-sweet smile. "I have a little sister of my own, after all."
Beside Thetis, Alyssin snorted. "The way your mother goes about, you should probably have more than the one."
That was it--that girl was not leaving the house for the rest of the week! "Alyssin!"
"What?" Her annoyance brimmed with such an understated exaggeration that only an eleven-year-old girl could possess. "It's true and you know it!"
She just wants the attention, Thetis told herself as she often did. If you ignore her, she'll stop.
"Hell, she doesn't even have to cook one more person," insisted Alyssin with a shudder. "Riala can have mine!"
Thetis ignored that comment--Alyssin, however, did not. "I'm guessing she's not your mother."
Oh, how many times must she see those eyes widen in protest? "But I don't want to give the twins my cold!"
"You don't have a cold!"
"It's a stealth cold!"
Thetis tossed back her head and bit her lip; her daughter certainly didn't get that from her side. "Why can't you be more like your sister? She's been nice and quiet this entire time."
Skeptical, Alyssin glanced toward Evera and frowned. "I bet she's not being quiet in her head."
"Well... maybe just a little flushed," Evera admitted, placing the poker to the side and stepping back from the fire. "Might I go lie down for a minute?"
Thetis nodded, then watched as her eldest disappeared up the stairs. Now only Alyssin and Riala remained out of the girls; if her stepson left before either of them, Thetis did not think she would be able to bear it.
"Plus Hamrick and Dragon will probably give you their dinners as well," Alyssin added with confident glee.
"Thank you, but no." Riala flashed an obligatory smile, then pulled herself to her feet, Setran following suit. "In fact, I should probably be going now. Thank you for your hospitality, Mistress Tumekrin."
"Any time," Thetis replied, though she wasn't sure she meant it. "Give your regards to your father for me."
"I shall."
"My pleasure." Riala pursed her lips as if expecting a kiss, but Setran merely patted her on the shoulder and opened the door for her. His gaze followed her off for a silent couple of minutes; then, without saying a word to either his stepmother or his sister, he slammed the door shut and trudged up the stairs.

Sorry that this is so late. I had a lethargic limbo of a day and it took forever to arse myself to do anything other than mope around. I haven't even had supper yet and it's already midnight :S
You should take better care of yourself Van. Ofcourse, I'm one to talk. With my 7 month old I'm lucky if I can find time for more than a Mountain Dew to eat for the entire day. Even then I usually only drink a few swallows and the rest probably will get knocked onto the carpet at some point. So yeah, I feel your pain.
Interesting chapter, was Setrin ticked off at the end there and that's why he slammed the door, or is he just not as interested in her as she'd like him to be.
Heheh... it can be tough finding quick meals :S
I think we need a look into Setran's head before any real conclusions can be drawn, but it seems to me that the one sentence that really sums up his whole relationship with Riala is Alyssin's line of "she's always over here, but they're never hanging off each other". I think Setran wants to like Riala, but he's not necessarily succeeding.
Thanks Keri :)
oh my god, Alyssin is a monster! I was laughing and choking at the same time. Seems to me it's about more than just wanting attention; her digs were sharp.
Setran may not be all that keen on her, and trying to find a way to like someone when it simply is not there rarely works.
You do need to take better care of yourself....
Alyssin is a bundle of Florianesque tendencies without having learned whatever little self-control has to accompany them :P
Yeah, it's only a matter of time before Setran gives up on this. He's stubborn, but I don't think he's stubborn enough to court Riala throughout the rest of their youth and marry her just to prove a point.
Trying, but it can be difficult :S Thanks Beth :)
Alyssin is her father's daughter. I hope she learns some of her mother's grace at some point or she will truly become a shrew.
I have to wonder if Riala feels the same as Setran or if she hopes it will become something more given time. Either way I feel for him.
Take care Van!
Also wondering what seems to be afflicting Evera...
Oh, Alyssin is definitely her father's daughter. She's only eleven, though, so there's hope for her yet :P
It's just a shame that she's too old for Seoth's son--can you imagine Seoth with a live-in Florian-like in-law? :D
As for Riala's feelings for Setran, I think we can at least infer that she likes him more than he likes her. Things might not stay that way, though--she's young and headstrong and probably wouldn't waste too much time on a guy who didn't seem at all interested.
And what was eating Evera? Good question ;)
Hhehehe Alyssin is absolutely Florian Jr. and OMG IT WOULD BE SO AMAZING IF SHE COULD MARRY SEOTH'S SON!! AHHHHHHH!!!
Maybe she could just start drinking men under the table at Seoth's pub.
I have hummus. I have fresh bread. I have Naroniez. My night is complete.
Alas, Seoth's son is a little too young :( However, if any of her siblings married any of Seoth's kids (which absolutely has to happen because Seoth's reaction would be priceless), then I'm sure she'll be dropping by the inn on occasion :)
Enjoy the night, Pen :)
