In Which Leara Persists After a Minute's Rest

February 13, 1177

If it wasn't one thing around these parts, then it was another. Leara had been up half the night as a result of her daughter's nightmares, only to wake to find that her son had stolen an entire cake from the kitchens and was sick as a result. Ricky had been asking for Papa, so she'd set off to find Lorn--only to realize that he was in conference with a stubborn Sir Isidro, calling for an investigation of that bizarre Brother Remiel. She'd had to turn around and assure her son that Papa would be with him as soon as he could before she finally had a minute to sit down and breathe.

A minute. Literally one minute and Aydelle was there, Rona's new maid in tow, tears streaming down the girl's face. Something about the sloppy state of the ties on Rona's sleeves. If the poor child's shuddering state had been any indication, her fingers must have been shaky--not that Leara could blame her, considering that Rona had done nothing but criticize Electra since she'd started.

Really. It was about time someone had a chat with that girl, but it figured that it would have to be today. "Mind if I join you?"

Her sister-in-law shrugged. "You're the duchess."

An exasperated 'Fine!' if there ever was one. Sighing, Leara shut the door and dragged her tired form to the empty side of the bed, easing herself down beside Rona. "Your sleeves don't look that bad."

"They're too loose." Rona waved her arm up and down as if to prove her point. "And before that, they were too tight. And before that, they were too loose--again. That stupid girl has no concept of moderation."

Really--they looked about the same as they always did. Leara bit her lip. "Well, I suppose you're the one who can feel it. But don't you think you're being a little hard on her? She's quite young, you know." Too young. Indeed, Lorn probably wouldn't have hired her if her father hadn't been so damn persistent, but she knew better than to say it aloud; if Rona knew that she'd only gotten the job by virtue of being Florian's daughter, her poor maid would never hear the end of it.

Rona sniffed. "Lady Leonora wasn't much older when she went to work for Lady Alina. I doubt she was so incompetent."

Incompetence. As if this had anything to do with it. Eleven-year-old steward's daughter or experienced, highly-skilled lady's maid extraordinaire, Rona had resolved to be unsatisfied and it wasn't that hard to figure out why. "Honey, I know you and Aspen were friends, but--"

"But what? She stood up for me and lost her job because of it?"

Leara hesitated. It was true... but then again so was everything else. Standing up for her lady or not, a servant couldn't chew out a knight--much less spit on him--and get away with it. Surely Rona understood that? "It's more complicated than that. If Lorn hadn't let her go, we would have risked offending Sir Lonriad--and by extension, his family. And considering how great of a mentor Lord Severin was to Lorn after your father died..."

"Leara, I doubt Lord Severin would have wanted her fired." Rona picked at the ribbon beneath her bust. That did look a little snug, Leara supposed; maybe Electra's exaggerated shortcomings weren't without basis. "Besides, didn't Lonriad insult our family first? He passed me over for a farm girl!"

But you didn't even love him, Leara wanted to remind her. You just wanted to marry someone in the area. "Rona, we'll find someone--"

"This isn't about that." All semblance of good posture abandoned, Rona slumped toward the foot of the bed, her golden head sinking into the pillow. "I just never knew you could miss someone so much."

Yikes, I think I need to tidy up some of the textures on Rona's dress :S

But daaaamn I have been obsessed with that mesh lately. I've been thinking of making some recolors of some textures Andavri made for that mesh, because the mesh is awesome and underrated and Andavri's textures are so pretty.

Okay. In other, more serious news... I try to avoid bringing up real-life politics in the comments when I can, but I'm sure you're all aware by now of the internet censorship bills being proposed in the States (which will inevitably affect even those of us outside the States). There are several petitions circulating the internet and I'd encourage everyone to sign at least one of them. Here's the link to avaaz.org's: http://www.avaaz.org/en/save_the_internet/?cl=1392934253&v=11162

The dumb thing is... hasn't this same government criticized countries like China for internet censorship? Hypocrites. I won't rant much more on the subject, but I'll just say that any regime willing to squash free speech has no right to call itself democratic.

Aww, Rona's dress is pretty. *says the person who has only ever recolored other people's textures ... except for that one time ... which, yeah, didn't work out so well*

I'm so glad that Rona is realizing how much she misses Aspen, even if poor Electra is the one taking the brunt of it. I think that Lorn should really, really consider letting her have her job back ... and hey, Rona can always go to a higher authority (Severin). If Severin said that he wouldn't be offended (and he'd come down on Lonriad if he even considered taking offense), maybe Lorn would relent.

And YAY!! for Isidro taking steps! Smart little man!

... Also, little Celina is having nightmares? Is that ... something to be worried about (given Remiel and all), or just a case of a little kid being a little kid?

Rona's dress is a collage of textures, some of which weren't exactly made for that mesh :S

I can't imagine Severin or even Lonriad would care much if Aspen got her job back. Who knows where she's been since leaving, though? Before Lorn can give her the job back, he'd have to track her down first :S

Isidro can be a moody little grouch, but he sees what has to be done and does it :)

Celina's nightmares having nothing to do with anything. I just needed an excuse for Leara to be up half the night (kid's a little old to be breastfeeding).

Thanks Morgaine :)

Both of these ladies are so darn stunning!!!!
I can see where Leara is coming from, but I would most definitely side with the teenager who didn't get her way!! (I'm sorry logic, but I just love Rona too much to abandon her now) Why can't she have Aspen back, why couldn't her brother just send her away for a few days or punish her in some other, 'public' way to avoid the 'insult' Severin's family... And I agree, he wouldn't have wanted Aspen fired! Would he?
I'm glad that Izzy is getting off his butt and doing something for his girl, I'm surprised Laveria didn't do something like this, sooner.
Anyway... good reading!! :)

The other thing is that Lorn and Leara might have a kind of "what's done is done" attitude towards Aspen. Poor Rona may not be seeing her friend again for a while :(

Next chapter is Izzy's POV, so we'll get a follow-up on that situation there (even if it is by means of Jadin and much toddler spam).

Thanks EkhoGirl :)

So Isidro has decided to broach the subject of the odd clergyman. I doubt it does any good, but it says a lot for him. Finally.

I feel bad for Rona, but she isn't being very realistic. Did she really feel that strongly? I guess she did. The snippy remark about the farm girl makes it hard to feel a whole lot of sympathy for her, though. It would still hurt if she cares, farm girl or princess.

For Isidro, the whole thing got very personal very quickly :S

Rona is not without her meaner side. She and Aspen were quite close and it bothers her to see Aspen "replaced". It probably bothers her even more that everyone else has just gotten over it already and she's expected to do the same.
