In Which Bernardo Lets It Stay

January 11, 1175

"Looks like Isidro's horse has made a friend," mused Bernardo as his cousin's pinto nuzzled the perlino mare to his right. "Christ, have you ever seen a more even-tempered stallion? I've seen old milk cows more aggressive than this one."

Augustin sniffed. "'Nardo, it's Isidro's horse. Like that kid would go anywhere near a horse worth the trouble."

"Would you, though?" Bernardo placed his hand on the back of his neck and rubbed. He himself was not the most sensitive of people, but where Augustin was concerned, even he felt the need to compensate. "If what happened the last time he was near a 'horse worth the trouble' happened to you?"

"Of course I would." Augustin sneered down his oversized nose as he always did; it wasn't quite so impressive while he was seated, but the smug sentiment that came with it was the same as ever. "As would any man worthy of his own name. That's why Uncle is considering naming me his heir."

...eh? That was a surprise. Then again, it wasn't. "But what about Is--?"

Augustin shrugged. "What about him? Look, I have a certain amount of... pity for the kid too, but surely it's not so difficult to understand that a man such as our uncle might not want to bequeath everything he owns to a scrawny little half-Saracen with a bit of a limp, a big ugly scar and a morbid fear of horses."

"Yes, but..." But what? Men like Domingo weren't apt to favor boys solely on the basis of them being his sons. On the contrary, perhaps that made boys like Isidro seem like even more monumental of failures. Unable to find his argument, Bernardo crossed his arms and slouched as best he could on a bench without a back. "I don't know. It just doesn't seem right that the kid might get nothing."

His brother replied with a deft wave of his hand. "Maybe. Then again, I can't imagine he expects much out of life at this point."

"No, I really don't."

Bernardo's throat ran dry as Isidro prowled out of the inn, shuffling somewhat as he always did in the cooler months, a grim Casimiro at his heels. How much of that had Isidro heard? Enough. The kid's expression was inscrutable. Maybe Augustin was right. Maybe there was a point past which one simply did not care and it was well behind Isidro. "Cousin..."

"Oh, shut up, Bernardo. My father already told me." Isidro turned away and stepped toward the corral fence and placed his hand on his horse's nose. Bernardo stood and took a few steps toward his cousin, but stopped short near the center of the path. Knowing Domingo, he had already told Isidro--twice, no doubt. Twice... a week... since the accident. And knowing Isidro, he hadn't said a damn thing. He probably wanted it to stay that way. "Anyway, he'll be done puking up last night's dinner soon. You'd better start packing up."

"Already done." With all the grace of a duke or earl, Augustin rose to his feet and spread his gaze amongst the rest of them: Bernardo... Casimiro... "Don't get me wrong, I love a good crusade as much as anyone, but I would prefer it if this one were efficient; I do have a pretty young intended to go home to, after all."

Casimiro's hand balled into a fist. Swallowing, Bernardo cast a wary glance Isidro's way, but his cousin only turned away from the horses and looked Augustin in the eye. "Congratulations, then."

Augustin smirked. "Thank you, Cousin. Now, how about we go upstairs and get our things, then saddle the horses and--"

"Uh... hello."

Anyone mind if I update here tomorrow instead of OU? I know what that chapter's going to be (for once), but these two posts sort of run together and it might be nice if they were up subsequently.

Why do they all refer to Isidro as "kid"? It seems really demeaning.

I'm surprised that Bernardo is surprised that Isidro isn't going to inherit his father's (lands? title? both?). I'm also surprised that Isidro *might* have been his father's heir prior to the accident. Much better men than Domingo would have never considered passing on their titles to a son with a non-white, non-Christian mother during this period. :\

Woot! Double Naroni!

I think I know who that blue shoulder belongs to! Not that it's that hard to guess, what with the tags and all. ;)

God, Domingo is an ass. Is it wrong for me to hope he gets killed on crusade, doesn't have a will, and everything goes to Isidro as the next-of-kin? Augustin too is an ass -- makes sense that Domingo would want to leave everything to him.

And double Naroni! Woot!!

Pen: It is kind of demeaning, probably unconsciously on Bernardo's part and maybe less so on Augustin's. Then again, Isidro is only... *checks database* nineteen. Oh wow, he actually just turned nineteen on the night they arrived at Severin's place. And no one ever said a word... :S

Isidro wasn't his father's heir until after the accident. Said accident not only "marred" him (quotes because he is kind of Hollywood Homely) but also killed his older half-brother, who was the heir prior to that. So he's only the heir now because he's the only surviving legitimate son and therefore the default.

But yeah, Bernardo was still a little shocked all things considered. I guess he just figured that Domingo had to have some attachment to Isidro (that and Bernardo isn't exactly the brightest crayon in the box).

Morgaine: I figured it wouldn't be a surprise for anyone, so the tag got to stay ;)

I guess we can't rule anyone's death out at this pont? But yeah, Augustin's not the world's nicest guy either, so maybe he and Domingo bond over that.

Hmm interesting, it would seem that Domingo isn't the only bitch-tard in the group. But then again given the times and that fact that Isidro is, as Penelope put it, non-white, non-Christian I shouldn't be surprised that they all look down at him. That plus what you said about the accident. If he cause the accident and it killed the first son well then it's almost amazing they tolerate him at all.

I expected this from Riona, she's just stupid enough to pull a stunt like this one. I gotta say, I kinda hope she learns a lesson. You know kinda like "Listen to your father dumbass!!"
Odd, I find her more irritating then anything else.....

Nice chapter :P

More on the infamous accident here ;)

Riona is kind of irritating :P And yet, that is sort of her appeal, or at least I find.

Thanks Chene :)

The irritating ones are the most fun to write! :D

You know I think that I admire Isidro even more because he will undoubtedly make his own way in the world at some point.

I recognized that shoulder as well prior to seeing the tag. However this makes me even more concerned for Riona given Domingo's past behavior toward young girls.

Pen: So true :P

Gayl: If nothing else, Isidro is scrappy ;)

The blue probably gave it away (damn, that family loves their blue). But who else could it have been? ;)

Yeah, Domingo isn't exactly trustworthy around young girls... :S

I really know almost nothing about the Crusades. Did they gain something by going on one, other than god's good wishes and all that? It seems like an expensive proposition.

It doesn't surprise me that Domingo would choose another heir, something more like his own loathsome self. Knowing this, though, does Isidro have some options? Can't he just leave? Go crusading with another team?

I've been looking at your trope page. It's fascinating!

I think it was mainly a religious thing, maybe with some plundering too. But who says they're going to reach the final destination anyway? ;)

Isidro could very well just leave. Then again, that's easier said than done :S

Heheh... the tropes page is a wasteland right now :P I'll probably pimp it with the next post to see if anyone has something to add.
