In Which Searle Is Struck with a Familiar Ache

August 30, 1171

Draped in nothing but Sparron's bedsheets and a post-coital haze, Searle flopped back against the mattress and sighed in content. When it had occured to him to start wondering, he'd figured that Sparron would be a rather awkward lover, shy and hesitant and even a little panicky, but to his great relief, he'd been proven wrong. For all Sparron seemed reluctant about their relationship as a whole, he came to life when the clothes came off--confident, passionate, maybe even wild. The last time, it hadn't been until several hours later that Searle had ceased hobbling around with a limp.

Had it been worth it? Doubtlessly. "Damn, you know how to wear me out."

He reached across the mattress and rested his hand upon Sparron's arm, only to watch as the other boy jolted upward. He should have known; this was always the hard part. "God, what were we thinking?"

"Who cares?" Searle's euphoria took its usual blow as Sparron kicked back the covers and sprang from the bed as though the mattress had become molten. "Aw, don't go! Can't we just lie here for a while?"

"No." The sounds of frantic rustling filled the room as Sparron hurried to dress himself. Searle rolled his eyes; why couldn't they ever just savor the aftermath? Sparron would have enjoyed it if he let himself, he was sure of it. "You should leave."

"But this bed is comfy!"

"I don't care." Sparron smoothed the front of his shirt, then strode around the bed-frame to Sparron's side. "Up."

Groaning, Searle pushed the sheets to the side and eased his naked form out of bed. "It doesn't have to be like this, you know."

Sparron sighed. "We shouldn't even be doing this at all. Remind me again why I let you talk me into this?"

"Because you want it as much as I do?" Searle's teasing was shot down with a glare. A familiar ache throbbed within him; never before had he felt so strongly for anyone, and never before had he felt so rebuffed. And it wasn't even as if Sparron didn't return his feelings--indeed, he got the sense that he did. It was this paranoid obsessing over not getting caught that stood between them, a risk that Sparron had blown out of proportion to the point where he now lived in fear of the day it would happen. Not that Searle cared to get caught either, but... what were the odds? It wasn't as if they were leaving doors unlocked or shouting each other's names. It wasn't as if anyone had any reason to suspect anything.

Sparron winced, then bent down and picked up Searle's slacks off the floor, tossing them to him. "Just get dressed, will you?"

There was no point arguing with him; watching what remained of his interrupted bliss get away, Searle pulled on the slacks and reached for his tunic. "Sparron, I--"

He was cut off by a knock at the door. "Sparron?"

His eyes shut and his lips a troubled line of anxiety, Sparron mouthed an expletive, then turned away from Searle and stepped cautiously toward the door. "What do you want, Florian?"

"Your father wants a word with you--something about clearing some of your things out of your room to make space for Camaline's." Searle could only watch as Sparron's posture eased with relief; his mind must have jumped to the worst, as it always did these days.

"Uh, well... can you tell him to wait a few minutes? I've got, err--I've got a girl in here."

In the corridor, Florian laughed. "A girl? You mean the kind with five fingers that's attached to your wrist?"

"What?" Both alarmed and embarrassed, Sparron shot Searle a quick look of frenzied disbelief. "Florian, I'm not doing--don't go thinking I'm--don't tell my father that--"

"What, that you're masturbating? Sparron, you're fifteen--it's not like your father doesn't expect you to have urges. Come on, you're a smart kid, you must have known that." Sparron looked as if he wanted to drop dead on the spot--and as Florian always did, he failed to stop talking. "Unless... my God! Sparron! You're picturing your stepmother, aren't you?"

Horrified, Sparron's jaw dropped; in any other situation, Searle figured this might have been funny. "My stepmother?"

"Oh come on now, don't sound so ashamed!" A faint chuckling could be heard from the other side of the door. "Just between you and me... I sometimes picture your stepmother too."

"All right, if you don't leave right now, I'm telling her you said that!"

Silence. Then--

"See you around, Sparron."

Florian's footsteps echoed from the hallway, one hasty thud! after another. Neither boy dared speak while they still rang--it was Florian, after all, and it was hard to predict what he might do next.

Finally, the sounds faded away. His face collapsing into an amused smile, Searle let out a snicker. "Well, that was close! But at least we can laugh about it now, right?"

Sparron, however, didn't look to have any intention of laughing any time soon. Stupid ass was too high-strung for his own good, really--and if he had to admit it, Searle found that kind of cute. "I love you--you know that, right?"

Sparron sighed. "Just go home, Searle."

Anyone who's been missing Alina might want to check over at Dovia Diaries. Just sayin' *whistles*

Oh, totally forgot...

Before I start outlining 1172, I figured I'd take some reader feedback into consideration, so I've set up a post with some vague plans and questions here. Feel free to check it out and leave some input if you have time.

Also, because I'm a geek, have a bonus picture.

Tee hee, love the bonus picture.

And *sigh.* Searle and Sparron. One so open and affectionate. The other so cautious and private. (Albeit with good reason.) I kind of think it's a similar dynamic to Octavius-Holladrin.

Speaking of which ... *snicker* You know, I think she scares Florian more than Medea ever did.

One last thing: "Horrified, Sparron's jaw dropped; in any other situation, Searle figured this might have been funny." Only if you're in it, Searle. If you're not in the particular situation ... it's f'in hilarious.

Poor Searle, at least he knows Sparron at least likes him back. Steps in the right direction.

Morgaine: They do have a strange dynamic, with their conflicting ways and all--and unfortunately, it's going to cause them some grief :(

I don't think Florian was ever scared of Medea... he just hated her. He likes Holladrin, but she simultaneously scares and fascinates him.

Thanks :)

Epi: Yeah, at least he knows his feelings are reciprocated. I think he wants to actually hear it, though :(

I love your bonus pic! What a creative and unique way to sort them out!

Searle certainly throws the L word around, doesn't he? Does he really 'love' Sparron? He's a lot more emotionally engaged than I thought he was, whether it's love or infatuation. And the exchange between Sparron and Florian LMAO!!!

Wonderful, compassionate exploration of two very different young people caught up in something that is probably beyond their ability to control.

Heheh... thanks Beth. I stole it from a bunch of entries on Dorkly (the South Park one was particularly amusing for some reason).

I don't know if Searle is really in love with Sparron. It's safe to assume that he at least thinks he is if he's willing to say it. But yeah, he's very emotionally invested in their affair and he wishes Sparron could be as open as he is.

Thanks. Glad you enjoyed :)

Okay, so I'm still trekking my way through this, and i usually don't voice opinions of characters until I get an accurate read of them, but I read this when you posted it and fell in love with Florian XD I know I shouldn't read out of context but I really really like his voice. Being home sick today gives me an excellent excuse to read more of this, though, so that's what I'm planning to do :)

Thanks Christi :)

From what I can tell, Florian seems to be the most popular character in Naroni, and has been from pretty early on. You gotta love a guy who says whatever pops into his head, I guess :P

Glad you're enjoying so far :)

*shakes head at Florian for thoughts about Holladrin* I'm telling Thetis!

As for the sketchy outline of possible future things, you seem to have it all covered. Could we get peeks at characters that we don't see much of though? Thetis springs to mind because Florian just brought her to mind. I have also been wondering about what became of Tavrin's sister. I'm also a Seoth fan. I am excited for the returns of Creepy Searle and Incestuous Searle even though Sunny Searle is my favorite. Love to hate those Searles.

Sparron had better be careful though. At this point, Searle is telling himself that Sparron has feelings for him and fear is the only reason that Sparron is pushing him away. He's right but I have a feeling that if this goes on for long enough, Searle will walk away.

Van said...

Heheh... I don't think Florian would actually cheat on Thetis, even if he's not immune to cleavage.

If we're seeing Setran and Evera, then we'll probably see Thetis too. I am planning on at least one Tavrin post, and either his sister or his lover (or maybe both of them?) will be in it as well. And funnily enough, I was just thinking about Seoth this morning ;)

And yes, we'll be seeing both of those Searles again. There's also Sir Searle who used to be Severin's squire, but he's currently happy and non-dramatic, so he gets to stay in the background for a while.

As for your analysis of Sparron and this particular Searle, you've hit quite a few nails right on the head there. Stay tuned...

Once again Florian steals the scene without even being in the room!

I have sympathy for both boys in this situation, but for different reasons. Sparron's fear is going to eat him alive if he's not careful; if he doesn't get over it soon he is going to end up a very lonely, sad man. From what we have seen in previous chapters, and from Searle's own observations in this one, Sparron's feelings are far from fleeting. He's far gone enough to forget his fear for a short while and make love to Searle, but the fear is stronger and he's soon back to self-loathing.

Searle sees all of this and his feelings for Sparron are strong enough that he will stick with him and try to help him over this fear; but as Penelope said, I can't help but think that there may come a time where it's not enough anymore, where Searle realises he has to either walk away or be dragged down with Sparron.

Van said...

Yeah, Sparron's in for a world of loneliness and unhappiness if he can't come to terms with who he is and what he wants, even if he does have to keep it a secret. Given the times, it's not irrational for him to be afraid of getting caught, but it's emotionally debilitating at this level. Poor kid needs to find some balance :(

And Searle... well, Searle's different from Sparron, and that's more obvious here then ever before. He's comfortable with himself--he knows that society would frown upon his love, but beyond the self-preservationist level, he just doesn't care. He's happy, or at least he could be if Sparron was, and the day could come when he just gets tired of being held back like that, no matter how in love he is.

Searle is just adorable. That first picture of him, with his cheeky grin. Who could resist that?

I love that Sparron is so diffent when they are making love and then back to paranoid, worried little Sparron afterwards. Poor guy. And poor Searle. Putting his heart on the line like that. And getting no reply.

Van said...

He's a little cutie, that Searle :)

Heheh... even Sparron has his moments of passion (and fortunately for Searle, they seem to be well-timed). But for the most part, he's still the same paranoid little guy he usually is :(

And yeah, throwing out an "I love you" and getting told to go home... ouch :S

I agree...Florian can steal a scene without even being in it. LOL at the remark about Holladrin.

It is too bad that Sparron cannot loosen up enough to see the humor in this situation. They are both on the opposite end of the spectrum with what is going on between them, almost to the extreme. If they can find a middle ground they might both be happy.

Van said...

Heheh... I guess this time, he at least had the advantage of lines, but still :P

These two really do need to find a middle ground. One extreme or the other, they'll both be very miserable; they need to find a happy medium.
