"Thank you again for your hospitality, my lord," Danthia acknowledged with a slight smile; it seemed that her husband preferred that she do the talking for both of them, though he did look to be in somewhat better spirits than at any point over the course of his stay. "Christmas here was lovely. You have the most wonderful children, and I'm sorry for imposing."
"Believe me, you didn't impose," Severin assured her, the memory of Laralita still firmly rooted in his mind. "It was our pleasure. Thank you for coming; I'm glad to hear that your stay was comfortable."
These stiff salutations were not the sort he would have preferred, though he felt it rude to say so aloud. Severin was the sort of man who bade friends farewell with jokes and embraces; however, despite Searle's relatively elevated mood, it still seemed necessary to weigh each and every word and gesture while in the boy's presence.

Even Raia seemed to sense it, he was acutely aware. His other children, as well as their mother, had given their farewells to the guests as they had left the breakfast table, but his eldest had chosen to accompany them to the front room. Perhaps he should have objected in the best interests of her innocence, but now that he thought about it, he saw little point in sheltering the girl; no matter what he did, she would eventually have to know how to deal with situations such as these anyway, and there was no sense in postponing the inevitable. At the very least, it relieved him to know that his ordinarily boisterous daughter did have the sensitivity to realize that this was a delicate atmosphere.
"Are you sure you don't wish to stay for New Year's?" inquired Severin, though admittedly more out of politeness than anything else; he wouldn't have minded keeping Danthia there for a while longer, but Searle had been staying with them for months and had yet to make an effort to be anything more than melancholy. The boy permeated gloom as though it were a strong, foul aroma, and it had the whole household rather on edge--for the children's sake, it was best if he left.

Fortunately, Danthia seemed to sense this--and understand it. "Your offer is tempting, but unfortunately, there are probably people in Dovia wondering where we are. We really do need to get home soon, and who knows how long the weather will stay this agreeable? We should get leaving while it's calm."
"Fair enough," he agreed. "I do feel guilty that you won't be enjoying any feasts tonight, however."
"We'll have our own feast when we get home," she assured him. "Won't we, Searle?"
For a moment, Searle didn't say anything--not that Severin had expected he would by this point. His eyes fell to his wife briefly, then--
"Goodbye, Uncle Severin. Goodbye, Raia."
Severin sighed. "Farewell, Searle."
"Goodbye Searle," Raia bade him, but by the time she had finished, he had already turned and started off toward the door.

Shaking his head, Severin gently patted Raia on the shoulder, then approached Danthia. It was true torture to see such a young, amiable girl so resigned; there was life in her, but she had yet to find an opportunity to release it.
"Danthia, before you go, let me tell you something about men," he muttered under his breath, though he doubted Searle would bother listening even if he could hear them. "You've probably figured it out by now, but I shall admit it on Searle's behalf--we're all idiots."

As of today, Naroni has been around for a whole year. Thank you all for reading so far :)
Unfortunately, I don't have anything too special for you all. I put up a little anniversary post on my LJ, but there's nothing huge, just some potential Gen. 3 test babies, some LOLs, and an offer to answer (almost) any questions you might have. I meant to have a new Dovia Diaries out, but that didn't happen. All I can give you for that is the knowledge that the next post there contains traces of Severin, a little bit of his older brother, and more Geneva than we ever need to see.
Again, thank you all so much for reading! *hugs* :D
The LOLs were awesome! :-D I know I am lame, but all it takes is a broken phrase in white Impact and eighty percent of my neurons light up. RENOVASHUNS!
Severin is so sweet. I love how he basically told Danthia that he knows her husband is being a dick. I'm sure it will help the girl to have had that acknowledged. I am still dying to see what is the extra reason he has for being so gloomy and self-absorbed, aside from the "didn't get the toy he wanted" reason.
Is Geneva naked in the next post? Trying to guess the meaning of your hint. :-)
YOU NO CAN HAS RENOVASHUNS.
Oh yeah, I'm sure it will help. She's definitely been feeling like she's the only one who's aware of how much of an idiot Searle's being at the moment. Everyone else just seems to be taking pity on him.
Ahhh, I was talking about the companion blog there. The next post here, as you can probably tell from the preview pic, is about Falidor and his wife.
*LULZ* I immediately thought you were implying naked Geneva too.
The lolronis were a chucklefest and your test children were quite attractive. Many happy returns!
It is SUCH a disservice to Danthia to take pity on Searle though. It's like people are looking at her and going, "Ouch! Tough luck, buddy." There is nothing wrong with that girl that I can tell. On the contrary, she has proven herself to be too good for Searle.
I am with everyone else...at this moment Searle is way beneath Danthia. I'm glad Severin told her what he did, mostly because it is so TRUE!
Happy Anniversary!
Pen: Who knows? That could easily be the case, especially if we have a Lonriad-in-the-making such as Rudolphus in that post as well (especially considering that this will take place during their horny teen years).
It is. Perhaps I phrased that badly, though. There isn't anything wrong with Danthia, and I don't think anyone thinks there is. It's just that Searle's emoness has a tendency to fill the room, so they notice that long before they even notice she's around (plus it's not exactly common knowledge that his problems have to do with a girl--the readers know more about that than most of the characters at this point).
Thanks Pen :D
Gayl: I've said it before and I'll say it again, Danthia is way way way too good for Searle. She deserves so much better, and he could have done much worse so he should be more appreciative of her. Unfortunately, he's being a dick right now.
And it is so true :)
Thanks Gayl :D
Oooh! Well that is an eye-opener. Does Severin know why Searle is depressed?
And what is this other girl like? Is she pining for Searle?
Severin doesn't know why Searle is depressed. If he had gotten to Raia's room like one minute earlier in "In Which Raia Overhears the Worst Princess Story Ever" then he would, but sadly, he did not. Raia sort of picked up on it there, but she isn't aware of it to the point that she feels she should tell her parents, if that makes any sense.
I don't want to say too much about this other girl at this point. However, if they shared a love strong enough to keep Searle pining for months, it's a safe bet that sh's pining as well.
*she's
Delayed! Sorry!!:(
Ugh! Searle is annoying! I hope that she finds someone that will take notice of her!!!
Happy belated Anniversary VAN!!!!:P
Thanks Phoenix :)
This is the last we'll be seeing of Searle and Danthia for a while, so he may level out by the time we see him again. Of course, if he hasn't by this point, that's a bit much to hope for :(
