In Which Falidor Calls at a Girl's House

February 2, 1156

So this is her house, Falidor thought to himself as he took a minute to observe the building. It didn't look too different from his own--only a little smaller, and with fewer windows. Of course, three people didn't need a big house, especially if one was only a baby; they were probably more comfortable than his own household of seven.

Oh, but he was being an idiot, thinking himself less fortunate than Thetis. It was Thetis, after all, who was only fourteen and married to an abusive man more than twice her age, as well as the mother of a pair of separated twins. Falidor had his own share of tragedies--his father had died not too long ago, and his mother was gravely ill herself--but at the end of the day, he could rest assured that all his family loved him; Thetis barely had any family at all.

He couldn't help but feel a little foolish as he approached the door. Sure, his lord had told him to do this, but all the same, it felt weird; he'd never called at a girl's house before. He barely even knew Thetis. She had lived with Lord Severin and Lady Alina for most of the time he had been Lord Severin's steward, but he'd only really ever passed her in the halls, spoken maybe a dozen words to her at most--would she even remember him?

Biting his tongue, he rapped his knuckles against the door.

"Come in," came the girl's voice from inside.

Well, that's definitely better than 'Get lost', he admitted inwardly as he opened the door.

He stepped into the house, closed the door behind him, and caught sight of Thetis standing only a few feet away, her back toward him, Byrn in her arms.

"Good morning, Thetis," he greeted her.

She turned around and grinned. "Hello, Falidor."

So she did remember him; that was a good sign.

"Hello, little Byrn," Falidor addressed the baby. "You've gotten big since I last saw you. How does your little mama carry you around?"

"Oh, he's no trouble," Thetis insisted. "Anyway, why are you here, Falidor?"

"Lord Severin sent me," he answered, trying hard not to meet those wide teal eyes; they made him feel rather nervous. "He thought you might want to visit your daughter today, so he sent me to escort you, and a woman should be along fairly soon to look after Byrn."

Thetis gave a small nod. "Well, that's very kind of him."

"He thought you would appreciate it," agreed Falidor.

"Yes, well... I'm just going to put Byrn down for his nap, all right?"

He couldn't help but watch her as she made her way to the cradle, a slight sway in her hips; giving birth, Falidor decided, had done wonders for her previously boyish, boxy figure. Now, though still thin, she did have a woman's curves--had she had this body before her marriage, she would have surely caught a better man than Norwan.

She placed the baby in his bed, then looked up at Falidor and smiled. "So, how are you, Falidor?"

"Me? I'm fine, I guess," he replied sheepishly. "How about you?"

"Not too bad, considering my husband's gone for a few days," she told him.

Falidor raised an eyebrow. "Oh?"

"He has some business back in Dovia. Probably went to buy a potion from some witch--see if it will make his hair grow back."

"I wonder where else he doesn't have hair," he joked--then he remembered he was talking to an innocent little girl, barely older than his sister Nora.

However, Thetis laughed. "Oh, there's hair there! He's lucky that way--it makes it look bigger than it actually is!"

"Maybe that's what the growth potion is for, then!"

Her laughter continued. Falidor had never made such jokes with a girl before, or at least never had amused her with them; it felt oddly good. Still, he never would have expected this dirty streak from sweet little Thetis.

"But seriously, though," she countered him, one eyebrow cocked. "I don't think any amount of potion can do anything about that."

If he'd been joking with some village whore, his immediate reply would have been "Well, you would know", but he didn't think Thetis deserved that sort of accusation; it wasn't her fault she had to sleep with the man. "He's just kidding himself, then," Falidor finished lamely.

Someone knocked on the door.

"Well, that'll be the woman Lord Severin sent, I guess," Thetis mused aloud. "Ready to go, Falidor?"

"Sure," he answered dully, suddenly distracted by a spider on the ground. "Whatever you want, Thetis."

Sorry about this, just a little quick drabble post for the sake of getting something up there. I must say, I'm looking forward to write the next one on schedule, but I had to get this one up first.

Also, just so everyone's aware, I will soon be juggling two blogs. A friend and I will be collaborating on a second story, which I will be making a site for as soon as I whip up a banner for it. This shouldn't impact Naroni too much, though (school impacts it a lot more, and I have several offline projects I'm working on).

"Holy crap, what happened to her baby," asks Penelope as though she wouldn't have to wait until the next chapter to find out.

Oh cool, a second project! Is it going to be medieval as well? How is the collaboration going to work? Will one of you be doing pictures and the other writing? I've been toying with the idea of starting a second project (probably a sim fic 50) but I'm not sure that I could handle a second story.

I will assure you right now that both Byrn and Evera are fine. What Thetis is cringing at is MUCH more random (and much more amusing).

Yep, the new project will also be medieval, but unlike Naroni, which is a semi-ambiguously located valley somewhere around the France/Spain area, the new project will take place in an entirely fictional universe. We'll be switching off with the writing in some yet to be determined fashion, and I'll be doing the pictures (which is kind of a shame, since my friend is the much superior builder/decorator, and she has Night Life, but I have all the custom content and hacks, as well as a computer all to myself).

I'm juggling at least five stories right now as it is. I'm just glad most of them aren't on the internet and can be left untouched for months on end without causing me any guilt :s

Also, any thoughts on the new pictures? Norwan and Thetis's house is unfortunately quite, dark, so this probably wasn't the best place to start with the new look. I do like the Louis skins, though, and Gunmod's radiance lighting. For the most part, my sims look a lot prettier--some, maybe TOO pretty:

LOL I do not blame Thetis if she's walked in on what I think she walked in on. DO NOT WANT! hehehehe

Is it just me or is Florian starting to look like Imin? But I don't think he looks TOO pretty. It's not like you slapped a Pixie skin on him.

The house is a little dark but I feel like it's realistically dark, if that makes any sense.

But yeah, everything looks so much sharper, now!

I like the Louis skins too- Mainly because they're not too shiny. Not that shiny=bad (I use some shiny skins and love them tremendously) but that not everyone can have a ridiculously healthy glow to them.

Actually, have you tried Enayla skins on Honora and Alina? They would probably turn out really gorgeous on them.

Keep me updated on the new project, BTW!

Will do. I'm taking potential banner pictures right now (for some reason, they've all been featuring the most attractive guy I've made so far), and will create the site as soon as I've settled on one, so the new blog will probably be on my profile later today, unless I end up leaving my house.

Actually, in case you're really bored, here's what I've got for the family trees for the new story so far: http://ashelia.tribalpages.com/

Password: ashelia

If you do end up looking at those, please excuse the rather strange causes of death for some of the long-dead ancestors--my kid brother insisted on helping.

Oh, and yeah, I don't know why Florian looks so much like Imin all of a sudden. Imin has that whole little doll look going on, though, which I don't really see in Florian. It's not that I think he's gotten attractive à la Dalston and Severin and Adonis, but he's definitely looking much too healthy for my liking.

I should slap some Enayla skins on Honora and Alina, and maybe on Raia too, as well as any future daughters of Severin and Alina. Raia doesn't grow up to be as pretty as her mother is, but I do think an Enayla skin would look nice on her. The one problem is that MTS2 is kind of a bitch on my computer and only works in IE, and we all know how long IE downloads can take :(

Penelope said...

Why don't you try ye olde Insimenator for Enayla skins?

http://www.insimenator.org/index.php/board,348.0.html

hehehe I love that you had your little brother think up causes of death. I kinda want to pop over there just to read them.

Van said...

Thanks Pen :)

Pixie Teak will probably look stunning on Honora. It might not be her exact original skin tone, but neither is the default replacement Louis skin, so it's all good. For Alina and Raia, I think I'll go with Pixie Dream. Sure, it does have freckles, which none of my sims have at this time, but Alina's a redhead--she kind of NEEDS freckles. And they'd probably look not too bad on Raia as well.

Heheheh, my brother is a somewhat disturbed little boy (well, if fifteen can be considered little). Some of the deaths he came up with are just plain bizarre.

Penelope said...

I love freckles (as you can probably tell by the number of sims that I have with freckles)!

Pixie Teak looks pretty. I think I have it but I've never used it. Now I kinda want to make a sim using that skin just 'cause.

haha, When you said "kid brother" I pictured a boy of about 9 or so.

He certainly acts like a nine-year-old :)

New site is up! Complete with crappy introduction!

Coooolllll.

I was going to compliment you on the new lighting even if you hadn't mentioned it. You kept them near the window so it worked quite well. And much more medievally-looking. :-)

I just hope Thetis's husband never finds out about this... even if he doesn't find out about the baby girl, if he learns a young male was alone with his wife in their house... *shudder* That man makes Verity's Radomir look like a cuddler.

Van said...

Thanks :)

Norwan would definitely be upset if he knew about this little visit, even though there's really no need to be. As you can probably tell from this chapter, Falidor does have a slight crush on Thetis, but even he doesn't fully realize it.

And hmmmm... I did say I'd planned a little romance for Thetis, but... let's see... he's around the same age, same socioeconomic background, nothing too horrible to look at... seems a little TOO convenient :)

I could do with some Naroni about now. When are you planning your next update?

Van said...

I'm actually working on it right now :)

I was hoping to have it up by last night/this morning, but I wrote the first part of my English diploma yesterday morning and after two essays in two hours, writing was the last thing I wanted to do. But it should probably be up in a few hours, unless I suddenly get really tired and decide to turn in early.

Penelope said...

Yikes! Two essays in two hours? I commend you on that one. It takes me forever to write anything.

Van said...

Thanks :)

Damn Alberta Ed. and their ridiculous time constraints! A lot of people I talked to had to rush through their conclusions. Luckily for me, the essay question worked perfectly with one of the novels my English teacher assigned to us, so I didn't have any trouble selecting a text to use.

I see romance blossoming! :D

It's not impossible. ;)
